Community Involvement

Community Involvement

The Community Involvement (CI) committee aims to engage the HSDM community in projects that serve Boston-area residents. Our committee chairs organize Give Kids a Smile every February and were able to provide dental care to almost 50 children in need last year. We are constantly striving to increase our level of community participation; to that end, we have begun a partnership with the ACTION pediatric clinic and the Wampanoag Outreach Group. These clinics broaden our scope of outreach by serving Cambridge and Martha’s Vineyard residents. Besides these primary projects, the CI committee has been involved in Share Your Love and local elementary school oral health education. We welcome any ideas or opportunities for outreach.

Give Kids A Smile

Every year, Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) hosts the ADA’s Give Kids A Smile program. The student-run event focuses on the oral health of children under 17, offering free dental exams, cleanings, and referrals. ASDA also partners with the school’s Operation Mouthguard to fit kids with free mouthguards during this event.

Wampanoag Outreach Group

Established in 2012, Wampanoag Outreach Group (WOG) is a collaboration between Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) to promote the oral and systemic health of the tribe on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, MA. Specifically, WOG strives to improve access to oral health care by addressing geographic and financial barriers. Students and faculty also participate in Wampanoag pow-wows and tribe meetings to learn more about the tribe and its culture.
