Fourth-year dental students who want to practice dentistry are required to take a live-patient clinical licensing exam. There are many problems with the current live-patient exam: patient care is delayed so students can treat the patient on the test date, dental students may need to perform procedures that are unnecessary and potentially harmful while at the same time ignoring other pressing issues that require treatment, and finding a patient to sit for the exam is time-consuming, expensive, and difficult for dental students. Dr. Alec Eidelman came to speak with Harvard ASDA about current efforts related to licensure reform, and ways for students to get involved.
