Happy Tuesday!!! We wanted to share @harrisrac ‘s reflections from the Virtual Leadership Conference held in November of 2020.🤩

Here’s a small snippet:
“This year’s ASDA annual leadership conference was an experience like never before. Rather than traveling the 985 miles from Boston to Chicago, I attended from my bedroom. The virtual leadership conference (VLC) was organized so that lectures were pre-recorded and played at set times. At the time the lecture would play, there was a chat moderated by the lecturer. We had the ability to ask the lecturer questions and get responses in real time as he/she was “lecturing”. Also, I heard from dental students across the country as they also typed their thoughts or suggestions into the chat. For example, I attended a session on study skills where the speaker talked about using a “memory palace” as a technique to help remember information. Although it’s an intriguing technique, I couldn’t figure out what kind of information to use it for until a dental student from California shared that he used a memory palace for nerves in head and neck anatomy. I appreciated getting to learn from experts and hear the ideas and perspectives of other dental students. ”

This year's Zoom-based session will focus on a large breadth of dental topics, including dental anatomy, periodontics, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, implant dentistry, orthodontics, and much more!

“I was drawn to HSDM for the unique way the curriculum integrates dental and medical disciplines in education, research, and patient care. This training will be instrumental in helping me foster inter-professional collaboration and practice to connect different silos in healthcare. However, there are more limited opportunities to explore non-traditional paths in dentistry at HSDM. As someone who hopes to pursue the non-clinical side of dentistry, VLC provided to gain new exposure to the multidisciplinary reaches of business in dentistry and medicine. Being conversant in business and healthcare is critical to fostering greater creativity, entrepreneurialism, and principled decision-making are central lessons in many of the many of the talks I participated in at VLC. Listening to the amazing speakers at VLC, I am eager to now contribute both the insight and skills I have gained to think innovatively about methods to integrate business knowledge with our training.”

“As it is for dental school, I wish I had the opportunity to attend the Leadership Conference in person, but I was still able to learn many valuable lessons from those who are experienced in the field. Here are some examples.

-Leadership, especially when it comes to managing your own dental clinic/business, it is important to find the right balance between being everyone’s boss and friend. Too much of either would subtract from a healthy team dynamic. People who you manage should not be afraid to approach you.
-As medical professionals, our brains are trained to find the flaws in any system, such as our patients, but in life and when dealing with our personal relationship, we need to switch to look at things that we are grateful for. Happiness is associated with relationships and gratitude.
-One key to time management is prioritizing. This involves being honest with myself what is truly important to me.”

Happy Monday! We wanted to share that Harvard School of Dental Medicine is hosting an event offering free dental care to kids aged 1-17 on February 6th, from 9 AM to 12 PM.
•
To keep everyone as safe as possible, there are only 24 in-person appointments available - but they are offering limited virtual appointments for those unable to book an in-person appointment. Appointments are on a first-come first-served basis.
•
To request an appointment, please visit the link in bio!! - after you enter your information, a staff member will call you to set up the appointment.
•
Deadline to request an appointment is January 25, to allow time to send out necessary paperwork prior to the visit. If at all possible, please plan to only send in 1 parent per family on the day of the visit. This is an additional precaution to help keep the total number of people in the building to a minimum.
